9/11/22: Shark Tooth Hill
Kids: $30 Adults: $40 Meeting place: Ernst Quarries 7:45a--8:15a We are planning a trip to Shark Tooth Hill in Bakersfield. Remember to bring food, water, hat, gloves, bucket, umbrella if you want and a blanket if you don't like sitting on the ground. All other information is in the attached forms to the left. |
8/14/22: Refugio Beach
We are planning a trip to Refugio beach this month. We will meet at the Vons 636 Ventura Street and the 126 in Fillmore at 7:00 A.M., it is on the lefthand side of 126. We will stop at El Capitan First since it is on the way. From there it should only be ~ 1.5 hours or so. That should give us enough time to look for whale bone and get out of there at a decent time. Whale bone shines up really nice. When your look for it, it is a grey material and when you polish it, it is black on the inside and you can see the cell structure. Please let me know if you are interested in going, so we have an idea on how many folks are going. As always, please bring sunscreen, hat, gloves and lots of water. There is no place to eat around there so pack a lunch. We will try to get out of there between 1 and 2 as to beat the Sunday evening traffic. |
5/13/22: Borax Mine Tailings
Sign in: 9:00am @ Borax Visitor Center We will be going to the Borax plant on 5/13/22, and meeting up at the turn off on Borax road at 9:00 A.M. The mine will have a pile of tailings set up in the parking lot so we may dig through it. They have a really nice museum inside the building. It is a very nice facility. If you are going to be late you can just join us at the facility when you can. You do not need a 4x4 to get there. You should bring sunscreen and water though. Hope everyone can make it. Sandy P. |

Field Trips
3/19/2020
ALL FIELD TRIPS CANCELED FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. We will update everyone when we will start up field trips again. For now, stay safe!
Saturday 4/25 - Sierra Pelona Gem & Mineral Club has graciously granted permission for a field trip to their claim for beautiful banded travertine. We will be traveling approximately 55 miles there from the show.
Sunday 4/26 - Gem Hill just outside of Rosamond for agate, common opal, petrified wood & jasper. We will be traveling about 40 miles from the show.
Meet at 9:00 in the parking lot of the show at the Fairgounds to sign in. All participants must sign a Waiver of Liability.
Bring: hammer (rock hammer preferred but any will do), collecting bag or bucket, spray bottle with water, snacks and/or lunch, water, sunscreen, eye protection, gloves. Wear study enclosed shoes, preferably hiking boots and long pants. (rattlesnakes live where we collect, so wear clothing to help protect yourself should you step or reach too close to one).
You will be traveling on dirt roads. High clearance vehicles are suggested, but 4x4 is not required. Please be sure you have plenty of gas when you meet to sign up.
These trips are geared for the whole family and are not considered physically demanding. You will be walking on uneven ground, up hills and over rocks. While the best material is usually found by working it out of the ground, you can find material in "float" just by walking a little.
We encourage you to bring your children and get them outdoors. However, they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who is responsible for their supervision and safety while on the field trip.
Please note there are no bathroom facilities at the collecting areas. We will spend approximately 2 hours at each location, giving you time to get back to the show and enjoy all the fun activities and visit our vendors there.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Paul, our Field Trip chair by completing the form below.
We hope you can join us!

November 2015, We were honored to tour the Omnya Mine Near Lucerne Valley
Our amazing Field Trip Chairman managed to arrange for a tour of the Omnya Mine near Lucerne Valley. The chance to collect minerals at this active mine, including many of them that fluoresce, does not happen often. We were thrilled to have had this opportunity!

The June 2015 Field Trip was to Cerro Gordo!
The June field trip was hosted by the Lone Pine Club, on Sunday June 28th. This trip gave attendees the opportunity to collect minerals on the dumps of a privately owned silver ghost town/mine!
